Orangerie Schoenbrunn, the lovely imperial greenhouse, was the site of a special musical evening on February 7, 1786, when Mozart and Salieri competed in a musical duel. The musicians were commissioned by the Emperor to write short operas. Mozart's The Impresario was performed at one end of the Orangerie, and Salieri's work at the other. Salieri won - he earned 100 ducats while Mozart received only 50.

Today Mozart and Strauss concerts at the Orangery bring back to life the romantic atmosphere of those past times.
