The Vienna Volksoper is the leading operetta theatre of the world.
The Volksoper was built in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Josef's reign. However, the Emperor did not attend the premiere on December, 14, 1898, as he was in mourning for his wife, Sissi.
In the years after World War II, the Vienna Volksoper became the alternative venue to the devastated Vienna State Opera. In 1955 the Volksoper returned to its former role of presenting a lighter fare - popular opera, operetta, and musicals.
Today you can indulge in the Viennese tradition with classics such as "The Fledermaus", "The Merry Widow" and "Countess Mariza".
