Mozart’s sparkling comedy about a young Spanish nobleman and his faithful servant breaking into a Turkish harem and freeing their fiancées is among the most popular operas of all time. Lisette Oropesa is Constanze, the steadfast young woman kept prisoner in the harem of Pasha Selim. Daniel Behle is her fiancé, Belmonte, who comes to her rescue, much to the irritation of Osmin (Goran Juric), the Pasha’s overseer. Regula Mühlemann is Constanze’s pert English maid, Blonde, and Michael Laurenz sings her beloved, Pedrillo.
The son of a Salzburg court musician, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. The young Mozart spent much of his childhood touring Europe with his father, performing before nobility. He went on to compose in all musical genres of his day and excelled in every one. Mozart's operas in particular represent the peak of his genius and remain unsurpassed in terms of beauty, vocal challenge and dramatic insight.
The German libretto is by Gottlieb Stephanie (1741 –1800), based on Christoph Friedrich Bretzner's Belmont und Constanze, oder Die Entführung aus dem Serail.
