Vienna’s classic operetta at the Volksoper
Die Fledermaus is one of the great classics of Viennese operetta. Its story begins with a prank, a prison sentence and an invitation to a glamorous party — and soon becomes a game of mistaken identities, secret flirtations, elegant revenge and champagne-fuelled confusion.
At the centre is Gabriel von Eisenstein, who should be going to prison but is persuaded to attend Prince Orlofsky’s party instead. His wife Rosalinde appears in disguise, the maid Adele reinvents herself as a society guest, and Dr Falke quietly conducts his revenge for an old humiliation involving a bat costume.
The result is light, witty and irresistibly Viennese: brilliant ensembles, famous melodies, dancing, comedy and social satire behind the glittering surface. At the Volksoper Vienna, Die Fledermaus is especially at home — a festive operetta evening full of charm, elegance and Viennese humour.
Cast for the New Year performances will be announced closer to the performance dates.
