Bernstein’s legendary musical at the Volksoper Vienna
West Side Story is one of the most famous works of musical theatre ever written. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, it tells the story of Tony and Maria, two young people who fall in love across the divide between rival gangs in 1950s New York.
The Jets and the Sharks are fighting for territory, identity and belonging. In the middle of this conflict, Tony and Maria discover a love that briefly seems stronger than the world around them. But hatred, pride and violence move faster than hope, turning their private dream into public tragedy.
With unforgettable music, urgent dance scenes and a powerful emotional arc, West Side Story is both a thrilling musical and a serious theatre experience. At the Volksoper Vienna, it offers visitors a dramatic evening of Bernstein’s music, Broadway energy and timeless storytelling.
