Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlo is one of the great dramatic operas of the Italian repertoire. Based on Friedrich Schiller’s play, it is set at the Spanish court of King Philip II and combines private passion with political and religious conflict.
At the centre of the story is Don Carlo, the Spanish crown prince, who loves Elisabeth of Valois. Their marriage has been planned for political reasons, but Elisabeth is instead married to Carlo’s father, King Philip II. Around this impossible love story, Verdi builds a darker drama of friendship, conscience, power and sacrifice.
At the Vienna State Opera, Don Carlo offers a grand and serious opera evening in one of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses.
Don Carlo, heir to the Spanish throne, loves Elisabeth of Valois. Their marriage was intended to secure peace between Spain and France, but Elisabeth is instead married to Carlo’s father, King Philip II.
At the Spanish court, personal longing becomes entangled with politics, religion and the struggle for freedom in Flanders. Carlo is torn between his love for Elisabeth, his friendship with Rodrigo and the oppressive power of king and church. The opera moves towards a tragic conclusion shaped by duty, sacrifice and impossible love.
The performance takes place at the Vienna State Opera, one of the world’s leading opera houses, located directly on Vienna’s Ringstrasse.
