Verdi’s moving drama of love, power and betrayal
Luisa Miller belongs to the period just before Verdi’s great popular trilogy of Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La Traviata. The opera already shows Verdi’s mature dramatic force: intimate family feeling, political pressure, a vulnerable heroine and music of great emotional intensity.
At the centre is Luisa, a young woman whose love for Rodolfo is trapped between social hierarchy, parental ambition and courtly corruption. What begins as a private love story becomes a tragedy of manipulation, false accusations and fatal misunderstanding — Verdi at his most direct, human and gripping.
