An adaptation of Herman Melville’s novella, Billy Budd is considered among the finest operas of the 20th century. Tension builds from the outset as an English warship enters enemy waters to fight the French. But the real war occurs among the English. Whether outwardly or internally, seamen are in perpetual conflict. Britten’s opera is as theatrically convincing as it is intellectually and philosophically engaging.
