Jonas Kaufmann sings the romantic poet André Chénier, an early supporter of the French Revolution who was executed on the guillotine. Maria Agresta is Maddalena, the pampered aristocrat who falls in love with Chénier and tries to save him—only to end up sharing his destiny. Carlos Álvarez is Gérard, Maddalena’s former servant who loves her enough to give her up. Francesco Lanzillotta conducts the thrilling verismo score.
