In Wagner’s colourful portrait of medieval Nuremberg, the wealthy Pogner (Georg Zeppenfeld) promises his beautiful daughter Eva (Hanna-Elisabeth Müller) in marriage to the winner of a song contest. But the girl has already set her sights on the handsome Walther (David Butt Philip). Naturally, various obstacles have to be overcome before the happy conclusion. Wolfgang Koch plays Beckmesser, Eva’s unsuccessful suitor, and Michael Volle is Hans Sachs, the cobbler-poet whose deep insights into human nature make this opera so much more than a delightful comedy. Maestro Philippe Jordan leads the orchestra and choir of the Vienna State Opera.
