Das Rheingold is the first of four operas forming Wagner's Ring cycle. This opera was written to set the stage for the trilogy of operas to follow: Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. Even before the curtain rises, the music pulls the audience into a mystical realm populated by gods and otherworldly creatures. The opera introduces the lustful and conniving dwarf Alberich, who steals the magic gold of the river Rhine, forging from it an all-powerful ring and upsetting the cosmic balance of the world. Highlights abound in the opera's fourth and final scene, which includes the fantastic solo of the god Donner as he unleashes thunderbolts.
