Dvořák’s romantic fairy tale, based on the classic story of the Little Mermaid, comes to life with the enchanting Kristine Opolais in the title role, the water nymph Rusalka who longs to be human. Piotr Beczala stars as the Prince she falls in love with. Evgeny Solodovnikov is Rusalka’s father, the Water Gnome, Monika Bohinec sings the witch Ježibaba, and Elena Zhidkova is the Foreign Princess, Rusalka’s rival. Tomáš Hanus conducts.

Widely regarded as the most distinguished Czech composer, Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904) is best known today for his opera Rusalka. Dvořák’s other compositions include symphonies, operas, chamber music and piano music. Many of his works were inspired by Slavic traditional music.

The libretto for Rusalka was provided by the poet Jaroslav Kvapil (1868–1950) based on the fairy tales of Czech folklorist and poet Karel Jaromír Erben and writer Božena Němcová.
