Mozart’s magical opera at the Volksoper Vienna

The story begins like an adventure tale: Prince Tamino is sent to rescue Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, from the mysterious Sarastro. At his side is Papageno, the comic bird-catcher, and together they enter a world of wild animals, magical instruments, trials by fire and water, and unexpected discoveries.

Yet The Magic Flute is more than a simple fairy tale. Mozart and Schikaneder create a world in which good and evil, light and darkness, courage and fear are not always easy to separate. Lotte de Beer’s production keeps the opera’s magic and wonder, while giving the story an emotional centre: a young person’s imagination opens the door to a colourful, animated world of fantasy.

With its famous arias, comic warmth and deeper reflections on growing up, love and wisdom, The Magic Flute is an excellent choice for visitors who want a Mozart evening in Vienna that is accessible, theatrical and full of charm.
