British soprano Louise Alder stars as Manon, the tragic beauty who turns from an innocent country girl to a celebrated courtesan and in the end to a destitute prisoner. Tenor Michael Fabiano is Chevalier des Grieux, Manon’s ardent lover who ruins himself in a desperate attempt to save her. Adrian Eröd is Lescaut, Manon’s scheming brother, and Dan Paul Dumitrescu sings des Grieux’s father. Evelino Pidò is on the podium to lead one of the most passionate scores in the French operatic repertoire.
Extemely popular in his day, Jules Massenet (1842–1912) was best known for his operas and oratorios. His style lost popularity in the early 20th century, with only Manon (1884) and, in recent decades, Werther and Thaïs (1894) maintaining a place in the the international opera repertoire.
French dramatists Henri Meilhac (1830 –1897) and Philippe Gille (1831 -1901), based the libretto on the 1731 novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by the Abbé Prévost.
