A double bill of operas about love triangles that turn violent and deadly: with Jonas Kaufmann and Elīna Garanča
Cavalleria rusticana vividly depicts life in a Sicilian village where love, betrayal, and honour become the ingredients of a tragedy foretold. The score sets the mood with a chorus and an Easter hymn, but soon arias and duets come to drive the drama. The best-known solo is Santuzza's "Voi lo sapete, o mamma".
Pagliacci shows a commedia dell'arte play repeating itself tragically in real life. The best-known aria, "Vesti la giubba", with its plaintive cries of "Pagliacco", is also a favourite for tenor recitals.
