Rossini’s charming take on the Cinderella story features Marianne Crebassa in the title role and Edgardo Rocha as her Prince Charming. Renato Girolami is Don Magnifico, Cinderella’s over-the-top, farcical father. Vito Priante is Dandini, the Prince’s valet, who, disguised as his master, also falls in love with Cenerentola. Luca Pisaroni is the philosopher Alidoro, who takes the place of the fairy godmother. Gianluca Capuano conducts.

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was the most significant opera composer of his time. Astonishingly prolific, he composed more than 30 works over the course of just two decades, before retiring from opera composition by the age of 37. Many of his operas are staples of today’s repertoire.

Italian poet and writer Jacopo Ferretti (1784–1852), best known today for his collaborations with Rossini and Donizetti, wrote the libretto for La Cenerentola at great speed over Christmas 1816. The text is based on the classic fairy tale by author Charles Perrault (1628–1703).
